Viewing Distance Explained

Minimum viewing distance
≥ – m
Pixel grain becomes visible below this distance
Optimal viewing range
–
The best balance of image fineness and investment
Current viewing angles
Vertical 0.0° · Horizontal 0.0°
Computed live from eye height 1.65 m

How it works: the pitch is derived from “best viewing distance ≈ P × (2–3) m” and rounded to a standard spec; screen height is estimated as distance × 0.34 (≈19° comfortable vertical field of view). Resolution / size modes are likewise rounded to whole standard modules, guaranteeing no cut modules and integer pixel resolution. The module size table can be customized under “Advanced”.

About This Tool

What does this page do?

The LED Viewing Distance Simulator is a free online LED screen sizing calculator that answers three key questions before you buy or design: what pixel pitch to use, how large the screen should be, and how many modules it takes. Enter any one of viewing distance, target resolution or physical size, and the tool derives the full screen dimensions, resolution and module layout from standard module sizes — plus the minimum distance, optimal viewing range and a live eye-view simulation.

What it does for you

  • Size screens three ways — by distance, resolution or size — always rounded to whole standard modules, never cut
  • Auto-recommends pixel pitch and the optimal viewing range, so you avoid grain up close and wasted budget far away
  • Live side-view simulation of eye perspective and field of view, with adjustable mounting height
  • One-click JSON export of all parameters, plus a professional branded PDF report for clients

Who it is for

  • Contractors & system integrators: estimate screen specs and budgets at the early project stage
  • Buyers & decision makers: compare size, resolution and cost across pixel pitches
  • Designers & consultants: verify viewing distance, angles and mounting height
  • Sales & solution engineers: deliver a branded report straight to the client

Every parameter is adjustable: base edge height, observer eye height, and the standard module size table for each pitch. All parameters export to JSON in one click, and a branded PDF sizing report can be generated for internal reviews or sent directly to your client.

LED Screen Selection Guide

Pixel pitch, lamp packaging, brightness and protection — everything you need to spec the right screen.

01 · Pixel pitch × viewing distance

Choosing pitch: start from where your audience stands

Pixel pitch (P value) is the center-to-center distance between adjacent LEDs, in millimeters. It is the No.1 factor behind image sharpness and price — from the same spot, P2 and P6 look worlds apart. The first step of any selection is always confirming where the closest viewer will stand.

Minimum distance
≈ P (mm value ≈ meters)
Pixel grain becomes visible below this
Optimal viewing range
2P – 3P
Best balance of fineness and budget
Recommended screen height
≈ 0.34 × distance
≈ 19° comfortable vertical FOV

Example: main viewing position 6 m away → P2 – P3 by the optimal-range rule. Enter your real distance in the simulator above to verify size and visual effect instantly.

02 · Indoor LED lamps

Indoor screens: fine-pitch SMD black-face lamps

  • Packaging: SMD surface-mount (typically SMD1515 / SMD2121); black faces deliver higher contrast and more uniform color mixing
  • Pitch: mostly P0.9 – P2.5 fine pitch, staying crisp even at 2 m viewing distance
  • Brightness: ~600 – 1,200 nits — comfortable for long viewing sessions in meetings and exhibitions
  • Typical applications: conference rooms, showrooms, broadcast studios, retail stores, command & control centers
03 · Outdoor LED lamps (gold-wire)

Outdoor screens: gold-wire packaging built for harsh environments

  • Gold-wire bonding: better thermal conductivity and stability than alloy / copper wire — significantly lower dead-LED rate and long-term luminance decay
  • High brightness: ≥ 5,500 nits, clearly readable under direct midday sunlight
  • Protection: conformal-coated modules + IP65 cabinets as standard — rain, dust and UV resistant
  • Pitch: mostly P3 – P10, with audiences typically 10 m away or farther
04 · Other key specifications

What else to confirm before you sign

  • Refresh rate: ≥ 3,840 Hz for scan-line-free camera capture — a must for broadcast and livestream scenarios
  • Gray scale: 14 – 16 bit processing for smooth, artifact-free shadows and low-gray detail
  • Packaging upgrades: COB / GOB protective layers for impact and moisture resistance — ideal for rental fleets and interactive touch use
  • Cabinet & maintenance: die-cast aluminum cabinets for lightweight rental use; front-service structure for wall-embedded installations

FAQ

What pixel pitch should I choose for a 6 m viewing distance?

Work backwards from “optimal distance ≈ pitch × 2–3”: 6 m corresponds to P2 – P3. Choose P2 or finer if the budget allows for closer, sharper viewing; P3 is enough for large promotional screens watched from a distance.

Can an indoor screen be used outdoors?

Not recommended. Indoor lamps deliver only 600 – 1,200 nits — nearly unreadable in sunlight — and lack waterproofing; water ingress causes mass dead LEDs. Outdoor projects need gold-wire high-brightness lamps with IP65-rated outdoor cabinets.

Is gold-wire packaging really that much better?

Gold wire matches LED chips better in thermal conductivity and thermal expansion, resisting wire breakage through temperature cycles. Field data shows notably lower dead-LED rates and luminance decay than alloy-wire packaging — the default choice for outdoor large screens.

Is a smaller pitch always better?

No. Finer pitch costs significantly more. What matters is the closest viewing distance: as long as no one stands inside the minimum distance, a larger pitch delivers better value. Enter your real distance in the simulator above to check in seconds.
